The Supreme Court has closed the contempt case against Swami Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna, the Managing Director of Patanjali Ayurved, regarding misleading advertisements.
This decision came after Ramdev and Balakrishna offered an unconditional apology and provided an undertaking promising to avoid misleading ads in the future.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court accepted their apology and commitment, which also included an assurance that Patanjali would adhere to truthful advertising practices. The case was initiated after the Indian Medical Association (IMA) accused them of making false claims about their products’ effectiveness.
Ramdev and Balakrishna had previously issued multiple apologies both in court and through newspaper advertisements nationwide. They expressed regret for any misleading information and committed to ensuring their advertisements would not deceive consumers.
The court’s bench, consisting of Justices Hima Kohli and Sandeep Mehta, emphasised that the contempt case could be reinstated if any terms of their undertaking are violated in the future.
The Supreme Court's action reflects a significant step towards accountability in advertising practices, reinforcing the necessity for honesty in the promotion of health products. The court's decision provides relief for Patanjali while also underscoring the importance of regulatory adherence in the business sector.
