At least seven people were killed and more than 32 others seriously injured on Monday morning when a passenger bus overturned following a head-on collision in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district, local officials said.
The crash occurred between 9:30 and 10 a.m. on the Dasuya-Hajipur road, near Adda Sagran, police said.
According to initial reports, the bus was heading towards Dasuya when it collided with an oncoming vehicle on a narrow stretch of the road. Eyewitnesses said the bus was speeding and lost control after the impact, overturning and dragging along the tarmac for several metres.
“There was a loud bang. I was on my motorcycle a little behind and rushed to the spot. It was a horrible scene,” one witness told reporters. “Children and women were screaming inside the overturned bus. I climbed in and pulled people out one by one. Many were already dead.”
The crash triggered chaos as nearby villagers rushed to assist the victims, who were trapped inside the mangled bus. Emergency services were alerted and several of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals.
At least 15 other critically injured passengers were later referred to medical facilities in Amritsar for advanced treatment.
Police arrived shortly after the incident and launched a rescue operation with the help of local volunteers. Rescue teams had to use JCB machines to extract bodies and survivors trapped beneath the wreckage.
“Several passengers were found stuck under twisted metal, making the operation extremely difficult and time-consuming,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Balwinder Singh, who was supervising the rescue. “Preliminary findings suggest a high-speed collision.”
“We are still gathering full details as part of our investigation,” Singh added.
Dr Manmohan Singh, Senior Medical Officer at Dasuya Civil Hospital, said three people, including a young child, were brought in dead. “Several others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment,” he confirmed.
Police sources said the driver of the bus was among those seriously injured. Authorities are working to identify the deceased and inform their families.
