Seven people, including a woman and her daughter, were killed by lightning strike during heavy rai,n as the monsoon set in across Jharkhand on Tuesday.
The deceased include brick kiln worker Manju Devi in Latehar district; Lakhan Bhuiya in Garhwa district; Ramlal, Saraswati Devi, and her daughter Rupa in Palamu district; Devlal Yadav in Chatra; and Teejamani Devi in Ranchi district.
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Ranchi, Dumka, Jamtara, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, Saraikela, West Singhbhum, Hazaribagh, Chatra, Koderma, and Ramgarh districts between 18 and 20 June.
Warnings for heavy rain have also been issued for other districts. In this period, lightning may strike in some areas, accompanied by strong winds.
According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon has already covered most parts of the state and is expected to reach Palamu, Garhwa, Latehar, and Chatra within the next 48 hours.
An orange alert has been issued for 20 June in the districts of Garhwa, Chatra, Palamu, and Latehar, forecasting very heavy rainfall. Hazaribagh, Koderma, Giridih, Deoghar, and Dumka are also likely to receive heavy showers.
A yellow alert has been issued for 21 June, warning of heavy rain in Garhwa, Chatra, Palamu, Deoghar, Jamtara, and Dumka.
The Meteorological Department has also forecast a significant drop in maximum temperatures across various parts of the state.
According to data released on Tuesday evening, the maximum temperature in the state capital dropped by 6.2 degrees and was recorded at 28.3°C.
In Jamshedpur and Daltonganj, temperatures fell by 5.3°C and 5.2°C, recorded at 29.9°C and 33.2°C respectively. Simdega recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 55.5 mm.
The southwest monsoon made its much-anticipated entry into Jharkhand on Tuesday, 17 June, covering 18 out of the state’s 24 districts and bringing much-needed relief from the persistent heat.
