The thought of building Ram Janmabhoomi Temple at Ayodhya was nurtured after the Ram Rath Yatra started from Somnath Temple located on India’s western coast in September 1990. Rest is history.
Today India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also the chairman of the Somnath temple trust, presided over the consecration of Lord Ram at the Ayodhya temple and the mood at Somnath is jubilant.
Somnath temple had sent a commemorative letter of ‘Ram Naam Mantra Lekhan Yagna’ to the Ram Janmabhoomi Tirth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya. The letter with gold and silver fonts represents 3.5 crore Ram Naam Mantra in 11 languages written from a campaign that was kicked off by Modi himself in Somnath.
The Somnath temple and the Ram Mandir of the trust have been fully decorated with mesmerising lights. The evening sound and light show will continue for some days with a 10-minute Ramayana script with Ram Dhun in the background. The long walkway near the temple on the bank of the Arabian Sea and the parking area are continuously playing Bhajans and Ram Dhun.
A live telecast was organised at the Ram Mandir Auditorium near the premises of Somnath temple. The moment of consecration was celebrated by blowing the ‘Shankh’ by 130 people as the jubilant crowd chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Thousands of devotees visiting the temple took the ‘Prasad’ of lunch.
The morning began with ‘Maha Aarti’ of Lord Shri Ram, Mata Janki and Shri Lakshman at the Somnath Temple, which is considered to be the first Jyotirling in the Hindu religion. It was followed by Dhwaja Puja of the Shri Ram temple Somnath with a Dhwaja symbolising Lord Hanuman. Abhishek of Ram’s idol was done with water from 9 rivers including Ayodhya’s Saryu river. There were a series of other programs planned for the day including Annakut, Maha Aarti and Hanuman Chalisha chanting.
The Somnath Temple was grandly inaugurated in 1950 by India’s President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. After 73 years, it is as if the history has been re-enacted on 22nd January 2024 at Ayodhya.
