The recent developments surrounding Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, have drawn significant attention.
Following a month-long student-led uprising in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position on August 5 and immediately left Dhaka for Delhi.
Upon her arrival, she was received at the Indian Air Force’s Hindon base in Ghaziabad, where she has been staying since.
A former Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor praised the Indian government’s actions in ensuring Hasina’s safety during this period of political turmoil.
Congress leader Tharoor emphasised that India has a responsibility to uphold certain standards, especially when it comes to supporting friends in need.
He highlighted the strong and long-standing relationship between Hasina and various Indian leaders, describing her as a true friend of India.
The ex-minister further remarked that had India not extended a helping hand, it could have led to negative repercussions on the international stage, potentially damaging India’s relationships with other nations.
He applauded the government for doing what he considered to be the right thing in standing by a friend during a critical time.
Following her arrival in India, it was reported in the Rajya Sabha by External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar that Hasina had made a last-minute request to the Indian government for assistance, which was promptly granted.
India’s role in providing refuge to Sheikh Hasina during this turbulent time underscores the deep historical ties between the two nations and India’s commitment to supporting its allies in times of need.
