Top LeT terrorist behind 3 attacks in India killed in Pakistan

Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Saifullah Khalid, the mastermind behind attacks in Nagpur, Rampur, and Bangalore, had been living under a fake identity in Nepal before moving to Pakistan's Sindh province, where he was eventually killed.

Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Saifullah Khalid had operated from Nepal under the alias of Vinode Kumar.

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Razaullah Nizamani Khalid, also known by multiple aliases including Abu Saifullah Khalid, Vinode Kumar, Mohammed Salim, and Razaullah, was shot dead by three unidentified gunmen in Pakistan’s Sindh province on Sunday, officials confirmed.

Khalid, the mastermind behind the 2006 terror attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur, was also involved in several other deadly attacks in India. A close aide of LeT operative Abu Anas, Khalid had long operated under various identities and was a key figure in the group’s terror network, especially from Nepal in the early 2000s.

According to officials, Khalid had left his residence in Matli earlier in the day and was gunned down near a road crossing in the Badin district of Sindh. Local media reports from Sindh confirmed he was declared brought dead at the hospital. Some Pakistani news outlets have suggested personal enmity as a possible motive, though no confirmation has been made.

Khalid was the chief conspirator in several high-profile terror attacks in India. Apart from the 2006 Nagpur RSS headquarters strike—where all three attackers were neutralised—he also masterminded the 2005 terror attack on the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. In that incident, Professor Munish Chandra Puri was killed and four others were injured. The attackers managed to escape, and police investigations later identified Abu Anas, who remains absconding, as one of the accused.

Khalid also played a key role in the 2008 attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. In that strike, seven CRPF personnel and a civilian lost their lives, with the attackers managing to flee under the cover of darkness.

From the mid-2000s, Khalid was in charge of LeT's Nepal module, overseeing recruitment, financing, logistics, and the movement of operatives across the porous Indo-Nepal border. His operations were significant in establishing a covert LeT presence in the region. He was known to have worked closely with LeT’s “launching commanders” Azam Cheema (alias Babaji) and Yaqoob, the group's chief accountant.

After Indian security agencies dismantled the Nepal module, Khalid relocated to Pakistan, where he became active again within LeT and its front organisation Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD). In Pakistan, he operated alongside senior leaders such as Yusuf Muzammil, LeT’s Jammu and Kashmir commander; Muzammil Iqbal Hashmi; and Muhammad Yusuf Taibi.

His more recent role involved recruiting new cadres and raising funds for LeT and JuD from the Sindh districts of Badin and Hyderabad.

Khalid’s death marks the end of a long-running and covert terror career that spanned two decades and multiple countries, during which he remained a top target for Indian intelligence and counter-terrorism agencies.
