The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, which will feature two elevated corridors spanning a total of 12.75 km. The project is estimated to cost ₹3,626.24 crore and is expected to be completed within four years.
The two corridor extensions in this recently approved phase—Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi—both diverge from the Vanaz–Ramwadi line that was constructed in Phase 1. In accordance with Pune's Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), these additions are intended to improve the city's east-west mass transit connectivity.
The new corridors will have 13 stations and offer direct access to quickly growing suburban areas like Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, said Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a media briefing. Prime Minister Modi, in a post on X, emphasised Pune’s growing role in India’s economy, saying the metro expansion would support the city's ongoing development and offer a significant boost to public transport.
The Government of Maharashtra, the Government of India, and outside bilateral and multilateral funding organisations will all contribute equally to the ₹3,626.24 crore project. Vaishnaw emphasised that the new corridors are a strategic and logical extension of Metro Corridor-2. He clarified that by serving important economic areas like IT parks, business complexes, educational institutions, and residential neighbourhoods, the additions would raise the city's overall public transportation ridership and share.

The corridors will be connected to Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court) at the District Court Interchange Station, improving multimodal connectivity. Passengers will be able to move freely between Pune's various areas thanks to this.
Intercity bus services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, while those from Bengaluru and Mumbai will be integrated at Chandani Chowk as part of long-term mobility planning, providing commuters with easy access to the metro system. By offering a practical, secure, and environmentally responsible mode of transportation, the new metro routes are also anticipated to aid in the decrowding of Pune's main thoroughfares, including Paud Road and Nagar Road.
Projections for daily ridership on Line-2, after the completion of these extensions, are expected to grow significantly over the decades:
- 0.96 lakh in 2027
- 2.01 lakh in 2037
- 2.87 lakh in 2047
- 3.49 lakh in 2057
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will carry out the project and supervise all ancillary, civil, and electro-mechanical work. Topographical surveys and detailed design consulting are examples of preliminary activities that have already started. Vaishnaw asserts that the Phase 2 expansion is a critical step in achieving inclusive and sustainable development throughout the metropolitan area and realising Pune's full economic potential.
