From October 23rd to 24th, the Government of India hosted the United States in New Delhi for the fifth annual meeting of the US-India Counternarcotics Working Group (CNWG).
This year’s CNWG builds on President Biden and Prime Minister Modi’s commitment made during the Prime Minister’s June 2023 State Visit to work towards a broader and deeper bilateral drug policy partnership.
And it follows the September 2024 signature of a new Memorandum of Understanding to launch the US-India Drug Policy Framework for the 21st Century.
At the CNWG meeting, the United States and India set out work plans for furthering the three pillars of the Framework: (1) countering illicit production and trafficking of drugs, as well as their precursor chemicals of concern; (2) advancing a sustainable and holistic public health partnership; and (3) advancing a secure and growing pharmaceutical supply chain.
Director General Anurag Garg and Deputy Director Monika Ashish Batra of the Narcotics Control Bureau opened the meeting with Dr. Gupta and U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of India Eric Garcetti providing opening remarks.
The United States delegation was led by the National Drug Control Policy, and included representatives from the National Security Council, the Department of State, the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Food and Drug Administration.
The Indian delegation was led by the Narcotics Control Bureau, and included representatives from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Central Bureau of Narcotics, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, and the National Drug Dependence Treatment Center.
