Uttarakhand's government has given the green light to relocate four tigers to Rajasthan following a formal request from authorities in the western state.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Sameer Sinha confirmed on Saturday that the selection process for the translocation of tigers to Rajasthan has already commenced.
Sinha emphasized that the tigers chosen for relocation to Rajasthan will not be sourced from the protected forest areas but rather from the buffer zone, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
Additionally, a similar request for the relocation of three tigers to Odisha has been received and is presently under deliberation, Sinha disclosed.
The requests from Rajasthan and Odisha stem from the success of Uttarakhand's tiger relocation project, which recently saw four big cats moved from the Corbett Tiger Reserve to the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, the official noted.
Further, Sinha mentioned that a fifth tiger from Corbett Tiger Reserve could soon find its new home in the Motichur range of Rajaji Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
"Moreover, they have also sought our relocation expertise," he added.
While the Odisha government's request remains under review, Uttarakhand has granted permission for its Forest Department to provide relocation training to forest personnel in Rajasthan.
