Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was honoured in New Delhi for successfully enacting the Uniform Civil Code in the state, a significant legislative achievement aimed at promoting social harmony and legal consistency. The code includes provisions designed to safeguard the rights of individuals in various personal matters, including relationships.
During the felicitation ceremony, CM Dhami highlighted the importance of the newly implemented provisions, particularly those concerning live-in relationships.
He emphasised that the introduction of registration for live-in relationships was intended to ensure transparency and to inform the parents of the involved individuals about their relationship status.
Addressing queries from journalists, Dhami explained that such registration would help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that families are aware and involved.
Speaking passionately about the motive behind these measures, Dhami underscored the need to protect the youth from potential risks associated with strained relationships.
He noted instances where conflicts in such relationships had tragically escalated into serious crimes, leaving families devastated with regret. By formalising these relationships through registration, the government aims to provide legal support and ensure the safety of all parties involved.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister stressed that these legislative steps were also crucial for maintaining law and order within Uttarakhand. By clarifying the legal status of live-in relationships, the state hopes to reduce social tensions and facilitate a more harmonious society where individuals feel secure in their personal choices.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was passed by the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 7, 2024, fulfilling a key electoral promise made by the BJP before the 2022 elections. The bill received presidential assent from President Droupadi Murmu on March 13, 2024, marking it as law.
This legislative milestone reflects Uttarakhand's commitment to modernise its legal framework while upholding societal values and ensuring legal consistency across personal matters.
The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code is seen as a progressive step towards harmonising diverse personal laws and promoting equality and justice for all citizens under one unified legal system.
The felicitation ceremony in New Delhi not only recognized CM Dhami's leadership in enacting the UCC but also underscored the state government's dedication to reforming laws in line with contemporary societal needs. It represents a significant stride towards fostering a secure and equitable environment for individuals and families within Uttarakhand.
As Uttarakhand moves forward with the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, stakeholders anticipate positive outcomes in terms of legal clarity, social cohesion, and the protection of individual rights, particularly in sensitive personal matters like relationships and family dynamics.
