The recent knife attack at a Udaipur school has drawn widespread attention, particularly from Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP) International President, Alok Kumar. On Saturday, Kumar strongly condemned the violent incident where a class 10 student was allegedly attacked by his classmate with a knife.
He expressed deep concern over the mindset that could lead young students to carry knives in their school bags. Kumar questioned who could be responsible for instilling such hatred in a child, leading to such a drastic and violent act. He emphasised that this was not an isolated incident but rather part of a larger issue.
Kumar also pointed to a broader societal problem, stating that a particular mindset within a section of society is contributing to the spread of violence not just in India, but across the globe. He called on civil society to reflect on these issues and to work towards ending this cycle of violence and hatred.
In response to the attack, the Udaipur district administration took swift action. On Friday, they imposed Section 144, which prohibits gatherings of more than four people, and shut down internet services across Rajasthan's Udaipur district for 24 hours to prevent the spread of communal violence. The situation in the city became tense as public outrage over the incident led to some acts of vandalism.
Udaipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogesh Goyal addressed the media on Friday, confirming that the child who was attacked received immediate medical attention and is now stable. He acknowledged the public's anger but assured that the authorities were taking all necessary steps to maintain order in the city.
Earlier in the day, Udaipur District Collector Arvind Poswal provided details about the incident, explaining that the attack occurred in the early hours and resulted in a deep wound to the child's thigh.
The injured student was promptly taken to the hospital, where his condition was stabilised. Poswal also confirmed that the student responsible for the attack had been arrested, along with his father, and that an investigation was ongoing to determine if others were involved.
Poswal appealed to the public to avoid spreading or believing in rumours, urging them to verify any information with the authorities before acting on it. He stressed that maintaining peace in the city is a collective responsibility and that the administration is committed to ensuring that no culprit involved in this incident will be spared.
