Eleven victims of Sandeshkhali violence, including five women, met President Droupadi Murmu, in Rashtrapati Bhawan on Friday. Dr Partha Biswas, Director of the Center for SC/ST Support and Research said, “Considering the issue of Sandeshkhali, the victims gave a memorandum to the President of India. The President has heard the entire matter with sympathy and expressed concern about their condition.”

As per the memorandum, the victims have asked the President to intervene to safeguard the rights of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The letter, further, stated that the situation surrounding the distressed families of Sandeshkhali is worrying which require immediate attention and intervention.

“Considering your position as the beacon of justice and equality in our country, we believe that your guidance and assistance will go a long way in addressing the matter,” it added.

The victims who met the President today are of the view that her intervention will bring relief to not only to people of Sandeshkhali but also boost the morale of marginalised communities across India.

Moreover, they expressed their gratitude to President Murmu for meeting them and considering their request. “Thank you for considering our request and giving us the opportunity to express the plight of the people of Sandeshkhali. We eagerly await your response and guidance on the issue,” they added.

The women force of Sandeshkhali have taken to streets to launch their protest against Shahjahan Sheikh. He is accused of sexual atrocities and grabbing lands of the locals by force. Shahjahan, who was a TMC leader, is in CBI custody now.
