Kolkata horror: Attempt to mislead the case?

Kolkata horror: Attempt to mislead the case?

Protests continue to seek justice for RG Kar victim.

From the word go, since the crime from the state-run hospital in Kolkata RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has been reported, there has been a constant attempt to ‘confuse’ and ‘mislead’ those associated with the case directly or indirectly.

First, the ‘death’ of the 31-year-old PGT doctor at the seminar hall of the hospital was being presented as a case of ‘suicide’.

Victim’s parents claimed that they received a late night call from someone who introduced himself as “assistant super”. He informed them that their daughter has allegedly died by suicide.

However, the manner in which the dead body was discovered, it was difficult to believe that the victim's death could have been a result of suicide.

The father said: “I saw her [my daughter]. There were no clothes on her body. She was only draped in a bedsheet. Her legs were apart, with one hand on her head.”

Details related to the dead body suggested that it cannot be a case of ‘suicide’.

Establishing its verdict on these details — specifically the ones revealed in the autopsy report — the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Notably, it was August 13 when the high court asked the CBI to probe the matter, which started its investigation a day after.

Strikingly, it was learnt that till August 13 — the crime was reported on August 9 — there was no FIR (first information report) lodged in the case. This leaves room for speculation, which raises questions on the state machinery. After all, till that time, Kolkata Police was probing the case.

There were traces of “sexual assault”, which were, reportedly, mentioned in the autopsy report. That eventually brought a breakthrough into the case and the crime eventually was reported as ‘“allegedly”’ raped and murdered”.

One wonders for how long the word ‘allegedly’ will remain an integral part of the case.

Maybe, a blatant attempt to mislead the case!

Another breakthrough surfaced when the developments suggested that the girl was ‘gangraped’.

Notable, the trajectory of the case has been: Suicide to sexual assault to ‘allegedly’ raped to gangraped to ‘supposedly’ gangraped and now rape again

Isn’t this, too, confusing?

A day before the nation could celebrate 78th Independence Day, it was learnt that she was ‘gangraped’. This observation was based on the amount of semen discovered from the victim’s body.

Some media reports claimed that “150 mg of semen” was found in the victim’s body, as per the autopsy report.

The parent’s petitioner had, reportedly, argued about this in the high court, suspecting that this is a case of ‘gangrape and murder’, which escalated the nationwide protests.

While the nation was perceiving the case as a gangrape, further information entangled every detail that had surfaced.

West Bengal Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal did a press conference and refuted the claim of 150 mg of semen being found in the girl’s body.

He also said that the police did not inform the victim’s family that the girl died by suicide.

So, two questions arise from Goyal’s presser.

First, who said it was suicide? If it was a “assistant super”, as the parent’s claimed, then a thorough investigation should be made into this.

Second, even if it is not gangrape, the recent details that have surfaced from the autopsy suggest that this kind of barbarism cannot be carried out by one person. There are other accomplices, who should be nabbed without further ado.

The recent suggestions from the autopsy which surfaced on August 19, reportedly, implied that the victim was subjected to rape.

Ten days have already passed since the RG Kar incident took place and we are still trying to gain clarity on whether it is ‘rape’ or ‘gangrape’, let alone bringing all the perpetrators to justice.
