Virender Dahiya, coach of Nisha Dahiya claims that it was an “intentional attack” from the North Korean side and accused the opponents of targeting the injured Nisha deliberately to steal India's chance of winning the medal.
“It was 100 percent intentional, they hurt her intentionally. We had seen, that there was an instruction from the Korean corner. They attacked the joint. They have taken away the medal from her,” said Virender Dahiya.
He added, “The way Nisha had started, the medal was in her neck and it has been taken away. The attacks were clear, the counter-attack worked and the defence was compact.”
He further said, “She had beaten the same wrestler at the Asian Qualifier, there was no way Nisha was losing this."
Nisha Dahiya faltered in a wrestling match against North Korea’s Pak Sol-gum as she incurred an unfortunate injury during the match, and was then ousted from the run in Paris Olympics.
Dahiya could still secure a medal in the Olympics if North Korea’s Pak defeated America’s Amit Elor, which could have given her a chance to compete in the semi-finals via the repechage. However, Elor significantly demolished Pak in just two minutes of the bout and stepped into the finals.
Indian wrestler, Dahiya was on the verge of adding the fourth medal to the country as she roared in her opening campaign in 68kg freestyle against Ukraine’s Sova Rizhko by 6-4.
Shattered in her yesterday’s match against Pak, because of a freak injury in her arm, her dream of donning the coveted medal was left unfulfilled.
Nisha had a major lead of 8-1 before her fingers incurred immense pain and then Pak took over the match from the second stoppage, having Nisha writhing over the entire match.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) further confirmed that Dahiya sustained a shoulder injury and the tests will clarify further.
“Wrestler Nisha sustained a severe shoulder injury during her bout today. It required reduction and MRI. She has been ruled out of the competition. The course of her treatment will be planned after further tests are performed," the IOA said in a statement.
