Trinamool Congress has always stood in solidarity with the expelled MP Mahua Moitra. On Thursday, while speaking at a government programme in Nadia district of West Bengal, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee came out in support of Moitra again.
In an attempt to explain why Moitra was expelled from the Lower House of the Parliament, CM Banerjee said, “Mahua always spoke for the cause of the people. With her questions, she has always left the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central government red faced. So they conspired against her and made a false case to expel her from the Lok Sabha. However, she will become the MP again by winning the people's mandate. Moitra always stood for the people, and in the ensuing general elections, people will stand in her support.”
Putting an halt to all the speculations regarding Moitra’s candidature for the upcoming general elections, CM Banerjee’s statement has clarified that Moitra will get the Lok Sabha ticket from the party that too from the constituency, which she had represented earlier. TMC chief’s remark came at a programme that took place in Nadia today. The district is known for having two parliamentary seats— Ranaghat and Krishnanagar. The latter is the Lok Sabha seat which Moitra won in 2019.
As far as Ranaghat is concerned, the seat was won by the BJP candidate Jagannath Sarkar. At the programme, CM Banerjee trained her guns at the BJP candidate (without naming him) for failing the people of the constituency. “They won from Ranaghat last time. But the people have understood how they have failed them. There has been no development in the locality. Locals know what I am trying to hint at. However, this time, I am confident that people of Ranaghat will vote for the TMC,” added CM Banerjee.
Nadia is a district that is primarily inhabited by the Matua community. In 2019, the BJP had assured them of giving citizenship by implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The BJP’s victory from Ranaghat constituency was pegged on this analysis.
However, riding on today’s programme, CM Banerjee reiterated her resolve against CAA and NRC. “The BJP has set a deadline for implementing CAA and NRC. I say this again; I will not let this happen in West Bengal. The BJP is trying to divide the people of the state and play dirty polarising tricks. However, I will not let their plan succeed in Bengal. I will urge the people of the Matua community and other inhabitants of the district to not get lured by the antics of the BJP. We do not consider Matuas to be any different from the rest of the people of the state. We are providing them all sorts of benefits. I have faith in them; this time, they will vote for us and not the BJP.”
