Preparations for the legislative assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are in full swing. The region has added 93,000 new voters, with an upsurge of youths and women on the newly published voters' list.
This also includes 209 new polling stations across the UT.
On August 20, the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir, PK Pole, said that the Special Summary of Photo Electoral Rolls with the qualifying date of July 1, 2024, had been completed in all the 20 districts.
"Extensive Special Summary Revision exercise with emphasis on making electoral rolls accurate, inclusive, and pure has been successfully completed in Jammu and Kashmir."
"We have succeeded in bringing on board all citizens who have attained the age of 18 and those who are first-time registrants, identifying and removing ineligible voters, correcting errors to improve the health and accuracy of electoral rolls," said the CEO.
This, according to the Special Summary Revision 2024 done by the ECI, is 88.03 lakh, comprising 44.89 lakh male and 43.13 lakh female electors, besides 168 third-gender electors.
There are 69,597 electors aged 85 years and above now, he said. The elector population ratio has improved from 0.59 to 0.60.
The number of young voters in the 18 to 19 years category has increased by 45,964; of these, 24,310 are women. The total number of women voters has also increased by 51,142.
"This massive jump in the number of young electors in Jammu & Kashmir shows the commitment of youth to exercising their franchise in the electoral process", the CEO said.
The total number of young electors in the age group of 18-29 years is now 25.34 lakh.
He attributed the comprehensive increase in first-time young voters to the successful implementation of the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation plan by the respective District Election Officers.
The gender ratio of electors has improved by 2 points, from 959 to 961, due to special efforts made in the Special Summary Revision exercise.
"A multi-faceted campaign, including prabhat pheri (early morning processions), door-to-door, and mass awareness programmes, has significantly contributed to the increase in the number of women electors," the CEO added.
The number of polling stations for the ensuing Assembly elections has increased from 11,629 to 11,838, with an increase in polling station locations from 8,930 to 9,168.
This increase is on account of the rationalisation of polling stations and locations, ensuring a distance of less than 2 km to facilitate voters.
Now, the number of registered PWD voters in Jammu and Kashmir has reached 83,191 and that of centenarian voters is 2,428.
