Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not want constructive cooperation from the opposition as he said something and did something else.
In an informal conversation with reporters here today, Gandhi said, Modi says something and means something else.
Quoting newspaper reports that Modi wanted constructive cooperation from the opposition, he said, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had called the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and sought opposition support for the election of the Speaker.
He said Kharge told Singh that the opposition was ready to support the government for the Speaker’s post, provided according to the convention, the Deputy Speaker’s post was given to the opposition.
He said, Singh told Kharge that he would get back to him, which he never did till now. He alleged that the ruling party was insulting their leader (Kharge) with this attitude.
Claiming that it was a convention that the Deputy Speaker was from the opposition, the senior Congress leader pointed out, that the UPA had given the Deputy Speaker’s post to the opposition.
He said, there was a difference between what Modi said and what he meant and did. He observed Modi does not want constructive cooperation from the opposition, notwithstanding what he says.
