Supreme Court will be hearing a plea filed by the CBI which challenges the ruling of Bombay High Court, suspending the life sentence of gangster Chhota Rajan in the 2021 murder case of hotelier Jaya Shetty and granting him bail.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
A three-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol and Sandeep Mehta issued notice to Rajan and sought his response within four weeks.
 "Issue notice, returnable within four weeks. In the meantime, counsel for the petitioner shall also clear the defects as pointed out by the Registry," the bench said.
 In May last year, a special court convicted Rajan for murdering Shetty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
 Rajan filed an appeal in the HC against the conviction. In its order passed on October 23, 2024, the HC suspended his sentence and granted bail.

 The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has challenged the HC order.
 Shetty, who owned the Golden Crown hotel at Gamdevi in central Mumbai, was shot dead by two members of Rajan's gang on the hotel's first floor on May 4, 2001.
 A probe suggested that Shetty had received extortion calls from Hemant Pujari, a member of the Chhota Rajan gang, and was killed after he failed to pay the money.
 Rajan, already serving a life term for the murder of veteran crime reporter J Dey, is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail.

SC to hear CBI plea challenging Chhota Rajan's bail in murder case

Underworld don Chhota Rajan was taken to AIIMS in Delhi for a medical surgery, prison officials confirmed on Friday. The officials stated that he was admitted to AIIMS on Thursday for a minor nose operation, which was recommended by doctors. He is expected to return to Tihar Jail after the surgery and will be monitored in the prison hospital under medical supervision.&nbsp;
Security around the hospital has been tightened as a precaution. Hospital sources mentioned that Rajan is being treated in an old private ward under the ENT Department. 
Rajan, once a close associate of Dawood Ibrahim, was sentenced to life in 2024 for the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty in 2001. In October 2024, Rajan was granted bail in the same case after the Bombay High Court suspended his life sentence.&nbsp;
 However, he remains in custody in connection with other cases. In 2018, a special court sentenced Rajan to life imprisonment for the 2011 murder of journalist J Dey. 
When granting bail, the Bombay High Court instructed Rajan to submit a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh. 
Last week, a member of the Chhota Rajan gang, Vilas Pawar, was arrested after evading capture for 32 years. Pawar, wanted for a 1992 shooting incident at Dadar police station and a murder case, had maintained control over Rajan&rsquo;s stronghold in Mumbai&rsquo;s Govandi throughout the 1980s. 
Rajan had been on the run for over three decades before being arrested by Indonesian police in October 2015. He was later extradited from Bali to India.

The Bombay High Court has suspended the life sentence of gangster Chhota Rajan, granting him bail in connection with the 2001 murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty. However, Rajan will remain incarcerated due to other pending criminal cases. 
On Wednesday, a division bench comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan directed Rajan to furnish a bond of ₹1 lakh for his bail.

In May, a special court had convicted Rajan for Shetty's murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. 
Chhota Rajan filed an appeal in the Bombay High Court challenging his conviction and requested that the sentence be suspended while awaiting the outcome of his appeal. 
Jaya Shetty, the owner of the Golden Crown hotel in Gamdevi, central Mumbai, was shot dead by two alleged members of Rajan's gang on May 4, 2001.
 Currently serving a life sentence for the murder of veteran crime reporter J Dey, Rajan is incarcerated at Tihar Jail in Delhi. His legal battles extend beyond the Shetty case. 
In a separate high-profile case, Rajan was acquitted last year by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court for allegedly orchestrating the murder of renowned trade union leader Dr Datta Samant, who was shot dead in 1997. The court concluded that "no incriminating evidence has come on record against the accused in respect of conspiracy to commit the murder of Dr Datta Samant." 
Dr Samant was killed on January 16, 1997, while travelling in his jeep from Powai to Ghatkopar, shot by four assailants. Although three individuals were convicted for the murder in 2000, Rajan was named among the wanted accused. 
After his arrest in Indonesia in 2015, Rajan was brought back to Mumbai, where all pending cases against him were transferred to the CBI. The legal saga surrounding Rajan continues as he navigates the complexities of multiple criminal charges.

Former Mumbai police officer Pradeep Sharma has taken his legal battle to the Supreme Court, contesting his conviction and life imprisonment in a 2006 fake encounter case.

Sharma's move comes in response to the Bombay High Court's ruling, which found him guilty in the case involving the alleged staged encounter of Ramnarayan Gupta, an associate of gangster Chhota Rajan.
