Following Lamine Yamal's exclusion from Barcelona's Spanish league match against Valencia on Sunday, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is not happy with the way Spain's national team treated the teenage forward during the international break.
Due to "discomfort in the pubic area", Barcelona announced on Saturday that Yamal would miss the match and that he is currently unable to even train.
Flick expressed his displeasure to reporters after Spain used Yamal for what he saw as needless minutes during last week's decisive victories in two World Cup qualifying matches. Flick claimed that despite knowing that Yamal was uncomfortable, Spain continued to play him.
“They gave him painkillers so he could play,” Flick said. “Between the games he wasn't able to train. That's not looking after the player. I'm very sad about this.” Yamal played 79 minutes in a 3-0 win at Bulgaria and another 73 minutes in a 6-0 win at Turkey.
The federation said in response to Flick's statements that it never received any notification from Barcelona that Yamal was injured and that the national team's medical personnel have frequent communication with clubs.
