Elena Norman, the outgoing CEO of Hockey India (HI), has announced her resignation after 13 years in the position, citing a "suffocating" work environment as a primary reason for her departure. While Hockey India did not specify the reasons for Norman's decision in its official statement, she spoke out about the challenges she faced during her tenure.

Norman revealed that internal factions within Hockey India, particularly between President Dilip Tirkey and certain officials, contributed to a hostile work environment. She emphasized Tirkey's commitment to Indian hockey's betterment amidst power struggles within the organization.

Compounding her decision to resign was the non-payment of her remuneration for three months, reflecting broader administrative issues within Hockey India.

Norman's departure marks the second setback for Hockey India within a short span, following the resignation of Indian women's hockey team coach Janneke Schopman, who cited similar difficulties.

Despite the challenges, Norman commended Tirkey for his support but expressed her relief at leaving the organization to pursue new opportunities. She plans to take a well-deserved break, including spending time with family and pursuing personal interests like fishing and trekking.

During her tenure, Norman played a pivotal role in HI's organizational achievements, overseeing major events such as the FIH Men's World Cup, Junior Men's World Cup, and Hockey India League. She also facilitated key coaching appointments, contributing to the success of both the men's and women's national teams.

Norman's departure marks the end of an era for Hockey India, concluding a chapter characterized by significant milestones and challenges. As she looks forward to new opportunities, her legacy within Indian hockey remains indelible, having played a crucial role in shaping the sport's landscape over the past decade.

In Norman's absence, Hockey India faces the task of navigating internal strife while maintaining its focus on advancing the sport and supporting the national teams' aspirations for continued success on the global stage.
