India’s Under-20 women’s football team is gearing up for a tough challenge as they prepare to face Russia in their final match of the Pink Ladies U20 Youth Cup at the Emirhan Sports Centre.
With two hard-fought victories already secured, the team is eager to finish the tournament on a high note.
The Young Tigresses have displayed resilience and determination in their campaign so far. They secured a 2-1 victory against Jordan in their opening match and followed it up with a narrow 1-0 win over Hong Kong.
The latter match was particularly demanding, as Hong Kong featured several players above the age of 20, including some senior team members. Despite the experience gap, India’s young squad held their ground and earned a well-deserved win.
Reflecting on their performance against Hong Kong, India’s head coach Joakim Alexandersson acknowledged the team’s strong start but pointed out areas that need improvement.
He noted that while the first half showcased good possession and pressing, the team struggled with build-ups and positioning in the latter half. Despite the pressure from Hong Kong, the Indian defence held firm, maintaining a clean sheet.
India’s defence has been a standout feature of their campaign, as they have not conceded a single goal in open play during the tournament.
However, Alexandersson emphasised that the team needs to improve their movement with and without the ball to avoid unnecessary defensive pressure. He also stressed the importance of faster transitions in counterattacks, which will be crucial against a formidable Russian side.
Russia comes into the match with an intimidating record, having scored nine goals against Jordan in their previous fixture. Their squad boasts a combination of strength, speed, and technical ability, making them a formidable opponent.
The challenge for India will be to maintain defensive discipline while finding opportunities to counterattack effectively.
Alexandersson highlighted the importance of defensive structure, pressing, and communication in dealing with a strong Russian side. He acknowledged that while the team has defended well so far, individual mistakes need to be minimised.
The game plan will involve pressing Russia high up the pitch at times while also maintaining a compact shape when defending deeper.
India will rely on quick passing and smart positioning to break through Russia’s defence.
The coach believes that transitions will play a key role in the match, as the team must seize any opportunities that arise. Aggression in duels and precise execution in attack will be essential to challenge Russia’s dominance.
