About 1,100 people have been arrested in relation to drug-related offences over the last four to five months, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta disclosed on Thursday. Her comments were made at a celebration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the Yamuna Sports Complex. CM Gupta praised the efforts of law enforcement for their stepped-up crackdown on the capital's drug trade during her speech. She did, however, emphasise that public cooperation is just as important in the fight against drugs as police and administrative actions.
“This programme is inspired by the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ initiated by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The Delhi government stands firmly committed to achieving this national goal,” she said. In keeping with the 100th anniversary of India's independence, Gupta restated Prime Minister Modi's goal of making the country drug-free by 2047. She gave her word that the Delhi government would do everything within its power to carry out its obligations in order to accomplish this mission.
The chief minister appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and proactive by reporting suspicious drug-related activities. “Many parents come to us in anguish, narrating how their children have fallen prey to drugs. They talk about families being torn apart and their own helplessness. In such painful circumstances, it becomes our duty to extend a helping hand,” Gupta said, highlighting the social and emotional devastation caused by substance abuse.
She encouraged people to use the dedicated anti-drug helpline — 1933 — to report incidents of drug sale, purchase, or consumption. “This campaign needs mass participation. If we work together, I believe we can completely eradicate drug consumption and trafficking from our society,” she stated.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including MLAs Om Prakash Sharma, Shri Sanjay Goel, and Anil Goel; Delhi Cabinet Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh; and MP Manoj Tiwari. Chief Minister Gupta stressed the value of directing positive energy, drawing a line between destructive intoxication and inspiring drives like community service, patriotism, and the desire to build a better future for future generations.
“In 2047, when we celebrate 100 years of Independence, we must be able to present India as a strong, healthy, and drug-free nation,” she asserted. Speaking at the event, Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh echoed Gupta's sentiments and positioned the anti-drug campaign as a grassroots movement.
“The Delhi government is not merely running schemes—it is leading a people’s movement. Our mission to protect the youth from drug addiction will reach every street, neighbourhood, and household,” he said. “A drug-free India by 2047 is not just a vision but our shared responsibility, and we will pursue it with unwavering determination,” Singh added.
