Fifteen hardcore rebels of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation today surrendered before security forces in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

All the Maoists are residents of West Singhbhum district and have been disgruntled by the exploits of Maoist leaders.

Among the 15 Maoists, some of them have been active for more than 7-8 years, joining the naxal dastas in the year 2016-17.

Police said that the surrendered Maoists were involved in various unlawful activities, including cases registered under sections like 147/ 148/ 149/ 307/ 353/ 504/ 506 IPC, 27 Arms Act, 10/13 UAP Act, and others. They said that the surrender is likely to have a major impact on the security situation of the area.

Surrendered Maoist Chandra Mohan alias Chandra Angaria alias Roshan, has a long criminal record, with a number of cases registered against him for the past many years.

Also, Aman Boypai alias Vijay Boypai has many cases against him, such as 302 IPC, 27 Arms Act and many others.

During the surrender programme at Chaibasa on Thursday the Maoists repented on their criminal past and vowed to contribute positively to the society.

The Maoists also said that their friends engaged in extremist activities should join the path of peace and reconciliation.

Senior officials of Jharkhand Police and CRPF were present during the surrender programme at Chaibasa.

Officials said that the Maoists contacted the security forces with the willingness to leave the path of violence and join the mainstream society. They laid down their arms under the State Police’s surrender policy.

Notably, all the Maoists were part of Misir Besra alias Sagar and Patiram Manjhi alias Anal Da’s squad. Misisr Besra has a reward of Rs 1 Crore on his head.

West Singhbhum (Chaibasa) district is one of the worst affected districts in the country suffering from Left Wing Extremism (LWE).

Owing to its dense forest area and difficult terrain in the hinterlands, the banned naxal outfit CPI (Maoist) has been at the forefront of the LWE activities in the district.
