For 2025-26, Gujarat has been sanctioned a grant of ₹50 crore under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). These sanctions have been greatly facilitating fisheries activity in Gujarat. It also focuses on the modernisation of the sector, enhancing traceability, and developing a strong fisheries management system with ensuring socio-economic benefits to fishing communities. Between 2020-21 and 2024-25, the Government of India has sanctioned projects (with multiple components) totaling ₹897.54 crore for Gujarat under PMMSY.
With the aim of increasing fish production and enhancing fishermen's livelihood, the Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the PMMSY. The scheme focuses on improving the infrastructure critical to the fisheries sector and filling major gaps in the fisheries value chain, including production, productivity, quality, modern technology, post-harvest infrastructure, and marketing.

In an effort to harness the complete potential of Gujarat's 2,340.62-kilometre-long coast, the government has made some significant changes in the fisheries sector. These involve VAT cuts on diesel, kerosene and petrol subsidies, land diversion for mp farming, road and power infrastructure development, and better port facilities for small fishermen. Four new fishing ports are also being constructed at Madhvad, Nava Bandar, Veraval-2, and Sutrapada.
For 2025-26, the state government has come up with some new initiatives to further enhance the sector. They are support for setting up Biofloc and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), support for purchasing medicines, minerals, and probiotics for mp pond preparation, and support for cage culture (Bhambharapani). Other measures are the provision of assistance for establishing conventional boat-building workshops, blast freezing units, and cold storage facilities for boat operators, fisheries cooperative societies, and fish traders. Further assistance will also be provided for replacement of boats and nets for traditional fishermen, setting up fish by-product processing units, seaweed seed banks, mp/fish/crab hatcheries, and seaweed culture through raft or tube net systems.
