The Patiala administration has sounded an alert in 78 villages near the banks of the Ghaggar in Devigarh, Ghanaur, Sanaur and Patran. As many as 65 of these villages are inundated. However, no erosion of the embankment has been reported.
Tangri river, which covers most of the areas in Haryana and crosses through parts of Patiala, is flowing 2 ft above the danger mark.
The administration has also asked residents of 21 villages in Ghanaur subdivision to vacate their homes and move to safer places amid possibility of a breach in the embankments of the Ghaggar. These villages include Tepla, Rajgarh, Mehmoodpur, Darwa, Sanjarpur, Nanheri, Raipur, Shamaspur, Untsar, Jand Manoli, Harpala, Kami Khurd, Rampur, Saunta, Chamaru, Kapuri, Kamalpur, Lacchru Khurd, Sarala Kalan, Mehduda and Sarala Khurd.
Teams of the Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been put on standby with boats and other life-saving equipment as the water level of the river continues to rise.
MGNREGA workers are camping near Sarala Kalan village, where the heavy flow is expected to erode the embankment, and keeping sandbags ready. Many villagers reluctant to shift elsewhere have kept their belongings on the rooftops of their houses.
