Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) is set to adopt cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to revolutionize the assessment and maintenance of its roads, footpaths, and drainage systems.

With the aim of identifying areas in need of repair and reconstruction, officials are set to deploy AI-driven solutions to address longstanding issues such as potholes, missing drain covers, and damaged street furniture.

Already in use for monitoring and maintaining 41 kilometers of roads revamped under the streetscaping project, officials view the extension of AI implementation as a crucial step towards efficient infrastructure management across the city.

The project's primary objective is to leverage advanced AI algorithms to conduct thorough surveys accurately, eliminating the need for traditional methods while reducing time requirements.

An official outlined, "Under this survey, there will be an AI vehicle equipped with an AI algorithm-based camera. This will be completely digital with no human interference. The vehicle will survey the roads, identifying damages or issues such as damaged kerb stones, broken tiles, missing street furniture, or drain covers. It will also detect other anomalies such as stray animal carcasses, uneven central verges, and trees in need of pruning."

Tenders have been issued to engage an agency for the AI-based survey, with plans for 42 surveys over the span of 42 months. Regular audits and maintenance reports will ensure quality control and prompt resolution of identified issues.

"The comprehensive dashboard will facilitate easy monitoring, with provisions for remote access via mobile phones," emphasized officials.

The West road -1 division has already identified 25 stretches for initial implementation, including prominent roads like Pankha Road, Vidya Marg Road, Mall Road, and Najafgarh Road, among others.
