Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Uttar Pradesh government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of supporting those who attacked Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman’s convoy near Aligarh. Yadav claimed that the attackers acted with impunity because they have the backing of the BJP-led state government.

The attack occurred on Sunday while Suman was heading to Bulandshahr. He was planning to raise his voice against the oppression of Dalits. Suman alleged that his convoy was targeted near Aligarh, where assailants threw tyres at the vehicles and attempted to break the windows. He stated that the attackers intended to kill him and were being protected by the state government.

Suman described the circumstances leading up to the attack. He explained that the convoy was travelling towards Bulandshahr, where an elderly woman had been killed in a car accident caused by speeding. The attack took place after Suman had announced a program in the area to address these issues, which had been scheduled for the past three days. The Samajwadi Party had informed the police and administration about the programme, and the area around the Ghabana toll plaza had been heavily secured.

However, Suman claimed that despite the heavy security presence, his convoy was attacked. He said that oil was poured on their vehicles, and the windows were smashed. Suman added that the attackers came with the clear intention of harming him, and he believes that they had the support of the state government.

Akhilesh Yadav strongly condemned the attack, linking it to Suman’s efforts to speak out against the oppression of Dalits. He also accused the government of creating an atmosphere of fear, using symbols like the bulldozer and the Thar to intimidate people.

Aligarh Additional SP City, Mrigank Shekhar Pathak, confirmed that a case had been registered in connection with the incident. According to the police, some individuals threw car tyres at Suman’s convoy. Legal action is being taken, and the investigation is ongoing.

This attack is not the first time that Suman has been in the news for controversial statements. Last month, Suman made headlines for calling the 16th-century Rajput king Rana Sanga a “traitor” for allegedly inviting Babur, the Mughal emperor, to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. His comments sparked protests and led to violent incidents. On March 26, stones were thrown at his residence in Agra, and vehicles parked outside were vandalised.
