Nearly 40-50 shops were scorched in the fire on Tuesday after a massive fire engulfed the 70-year-old Rangat Market in Middle Andaman in the early hours of the day. No casualties have been reported so far by the Police authorities.
Sub-divisional Police Officer of Rangat - Rahul Nair, speaking on the situation informed, "We received a call around 1.15 am about the fire. We immediately responded with five fire tenders but the blaze spread rapidly due to the wooden structures of the market."
“There have been no casualties. I would like to thank the shopkeepers for their cooperation,” he added.
Following the fire, shopkeepers, despite the partial damage to their establishments, promptly retrieved their belongings or salvaged what remained.
Litton Paul - the owner of Kolkata Cloth Store in conversation with a media house, said, "I am completely devastated by the incident as I have lost items worth lakhs of rupees. We demand a proper inquiry into the incident to find what exactly caused the fire."
During the unfortunate incident at the Rangat market, some individuals exploited the chaos caused by the fire to steal items from the affected shops, as reported by another trader. With a history spanning over 70 years, the Rangat market is famous in the Middle Andaman district.
