Assam is steering its way towards a green energy regime, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declaring the state’s commitment to embracing clean energy.
In a recent post on X, Sarma highlighted the aggressive shift towards green energy, stating that soon most of Assam's electricity and public transport needs will be powered by renewable sources.
The state has already made significant strides, installing 1.8MW of rooftop solar plants under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna, an initiative to promote solar energy adoption across Assam.
This scheme is part of a broader state effort to ensure a seamless transition to solar power for its citizens.
Among the measures taken is the adoption of net metering for residential consumers with capacities up to 10 kW.
This allows solar units generated by consumers to be adjusted against their grid consumption, effectively reducing electricity costs.
The government has also waived technical feasibility approvals for rooftop solar installations up to 10 kW, simplifying the process for residents.
In a move to further support this transition, the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) will automatically enhance the sanctioned load up to 10 kW upon the commissioning of rooftop solar systems.
The state guarantees that solar plants will be operational within three days of installation, with smart meters provided to beneficiaries at no extra cost.
State subsidies will also be promptly disbursed following the release of central subsidies.
To bolster the scheme’s implementation, the state has trained 107 solar technicians at the MSME-Tool Room and Training Centre in Amingaon.
Additionally, efforts are underway to augment Distribution Transformers (DTRs) and install new ones to ensure smooth project execution.
