The Assam Congress is on its mission to connect with five lakh educators across the state marking the auspicious day dedicated to teachers on September 05.

The initiative, which is witnessing party members visiting the homes of serving and retired teachers on September 5, aims to recognise and honour their contributions to education.

"The Congress party's extensive outreach to teachers is a multifaceted initiative designed to acknowledge their contributions, solicit their feedback, and strengthen the party's grassroots connections," a party statement maintained.

"By engaging directly with educators across Assam, the party hopes to build goodwill and bolster its position ahead of future elections," it added.

The announcement was made by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Borah had outlined that the party’s strategy to engage with teachers through direct visits by party leaders, current and former MLAs, MPs, and various organisational heads.

“This year, on Teachers' Day, our goal is to visit the residences of at least five lakh teachers. We intend to pay our respects, acknowledge their hard work, and discuss their views on the current political landscape,” Borah said. “Our outreach will also focus on gathering their suggestions for our party and seeking their blessings.”

The initiative, dubbed the "Guru Pranam Abhiyan," seeks to reaffirm the Congress party’s commitment to improving the education system and addressing the welfare of teachers. The programme reflects an effort to personally connect with educators, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping society.

Borah’s Facebook post highlighted the emotional significance of the outreach, citing his own interaction with a former teacher, Sri Thaneswar Kalita.

The post detailed Borah’s heartfelt message to Kalita, expressing gratitude and recalling the profound impact of his mentorship.

“Sir, your influence has been a guiding light in my life. Today, I stand as a testament to the values and lessons you imparted,” Borah wrote.

The Congress party’s strategy to engage directly with the public comes as part of a broader approach to enhance its electoral prospects.

Party insiders believe that such personal interactions, following the positive reception of initiatives like the Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, are more impactful than traditional media campaigns.

"Teachers, as influential figures in society, are seen as key to shaping public opinion and electoral outcomes,"  Borah said.

The Congress party’s effort to connect with them is also viewed as a strategic move ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections and the 2026 Assembly polls.

Borah’s post also detailed the organisational aspect of the initiative.

He stated that all party office bearers, including MPs, MLAs, and leaders from various committees and departments, have been instructed to visit at least one former or current teacher in their locality.

This move is part of the Congress’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its connection with the grassroots and underscore its commitment to key social issues.

The "Guru Pranam Abhiyan" is positioned as a tribute to Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the revered teacher and philosopher whose birthday is celebrated as Teachers' Day.

Borah highlighted that the new programme aligns with the tradition of honouring educators on this significant day, aiming to foster a deeper connection between the party and the teaching community.
