A poignant scene from flooded Kaziranga National Park, where wildlife is struggling amid rising waters.

Kaziranga National Park faces a devastating toll on its wildlife as Assam battles relentless floods, disrupting normal life and claiming numerous animal lives.

As of Sunday, floodwaters have led to the tragic deaths of 114 wild animals within Kaziranga.

Among the casualties confirmed by authorities are 93 hog deer, six rhinos, and two Sambar deer, all drowned in the inundated park.

Efforts by park officials have intensified to rescue and safeguard the remaining wildlife.

So far, 95 animals have been rescued, with many already released back into their natural habitat and others currently receiving veterinary care.

Veterinary reports indicate that 27 hog deer, along with one otter, one rhino, one elephant, one jungle cat, and a scoops owl, are currently under treatment.

A total of 50 animals, including two Sambar deer, 47 hog deer, and one Indian hare, have been successfully treated and released.

Despite these efforts, the flood situation remains critical across Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, with 66 out of 233 camps, including those in Biswanath and Nagaon Wildlife Divisions, still submerged.

This has severely hampered rescue operations in areas such as Agratoli, Kaziranga, Bagori, Burhapahar, and Bokakhat ranges.

Responding to the crisis, park authorities have deployed drones to monitor wildlife movements, particularly towards higher ground in the Karbi Hills.

Arun Vignesh, DFO and Deputy Director of Kaziranga, pointed ouyt the use of hand boats to locate and rescue stranded or deceased animals, ensuring minimal disturbance to those seeking refuge.

Despite a gradual receding of floodwaters, concerns persist for the welfare of Kaziranga's wildlife.

Ongoing efforts by park officials and wildlife experts aim to mitigate further impact and secure the region's diverse wildlife amidst challenging conditions.
