The Assam Rifles on Tuesday successfully rescued a diverse group of wild animals and reptiles from poachers in Manipur.

The operation resulted in the recovery of two Leopard Cats, one Asian Leaf Turtle, and two reptiles—a Cobra and a Copper-Headed Trinket Snake.

These animals were carefully transferred to the Manipur Wildlife and Forest Department for release in a secure environment under the Central Forest Division’s supervision.

The rescued animals were initially captured by tribal hunters in Kangpokpi district.

The Assam Rifles, known for their active involvement in such humanitarian missions, played a crucial role in securing these animals from potential harm.

The Assam Rifles, particularly the 22nd Battalion, undertook this significant rescue from Kangpokpi district, an area heavily populated by the Kuki-Zo tribal community.

The animals were handed over to the Forest and Wildlife Department with the assistance of People for Animals (PFA) Manipur, an NGO dedicated to wildlife conservation.

In a separate but related effort, the Heirok Police Station has facilitated the rescue of a Bengal Monitor Lizard, known locally as Hangkok.

This rare lizard was discovered by Khumanthem Sanjoy Singh at his residence in Heirok Part III, Ngarouthel Leikai, Thoubal district.

The lizard was subsequently handed over to state wildlife officials through PFA Manipur.

These coordinated efforts by the Assam Rifles and local authorities highlight a robust approach to protecting endangered wildlife and combating illegal poaching activities in the region.
