Assam seek Centre to help evacuate students from Bangladesh

Assam's stranded students in violence-hit Bangladesh can breathe a sigh of relief as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sought the Centre’s intervention to help evacuate them.

Bangladesh is currently facing major protests over job quota row from students.


Assam Students stranded in violence- hit Bangladesh can breathe a sigh of relief as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sought centre’s intervention to help evacuate them.

 

“I have spoken with Minister of state of external affairs Pabitra Margherita on the evacuation of the students. He said the centre is on the job of evacuating many boys and girls from Assam studying in the medical colleges of Bangladesh,” said the Chief Minister

 

The CM also contacted the High commissioner of Bangladesh, Ruhul Amin in Guwahati to seek aid for the stranded students. “I have not been able to foolow it up s there is a black out of internet and phone services in Bangladesh,” Ruhul said.

 

More than 800 students and tourists from India, Bhutan, and Nepal have already been evacuated from the country in the past 48 hours of which over 400, through Dawki, Meghalaya, officials in Shillong confirmed.

 

“778 Indian students have returned to India through various land ports. In addition, around 200 students have returned home by regular flight services through Dhaka and Chittagong airports,” the MEA said in a statement on Saturday

 

Meghalya officials confirmed the evacuation of more than 300 students through Dawki transit.

 

“More than 300 people have been evacuated via Dawki, Meghalaya till Thursday. And, some more students crossed on Friday.”

“202 people including four tourist were evacuated on Thursday, 67 were from Friday,” said officials.

 

They further informed, “95 were from Nepal and seven from Bhutan. And the Indian students evacuated on Friday included 13 Kashmiris.”

 

An ensuring safety statement from Meghalaya government stated, “officials were in touch with the Bangladesh High Commission and the Indian High Commission apart from the Land Port Authority at Dawki and the exporter’s association to ensure the safety of students.”

 

Bangladesh is currently facing major protest against the quota system in jobs. Mainly students want the system to be dropped by the Hasina government that seeks to reserve 30% of government jobs for the family members of veterans who fought in the country’s liberation war of 1971.
