In a significant boost to connectivity in Assam, the New Development Bank (NDB) has approved USD 333.80 million for the construction of a 4-lane extra-dosed bridge over the Brahmaputra River, connecting Palashbari and Sualkuchi.
The funding marks the bank’s second major investment in the region, following the under-construction Guwahati-North Guwahati six-lane bridge.
The new project, officially named the construction of a 4-lane extra-dosed PSC bridge over the Brahmaputra, includes viaducts, approaches, and river training works, to be executed in Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.
The Assam government had sought funding for this project through the central government, resulting in the NDB approving a loan exceeding USD 333 million. The state government will contribute Rs 6.77 billion as counterpart funding.
Currently, Guwahati has two operational bridges, with the third, also financed by the NDB, still under construction.
This new bridge will establish a crucial link between the northern and southern parts of the Guwahati Metropolitan Area (GMA), aligning with the Guwahati Metropolitan Area Master Plan (2025).
Spanning 12.2 kilometers, the bridge will connect Palashbari and Sualkuchi, enhancing transport infrastructure and providing a diversion for regional and urban traffic.
It will also establish a direct link between the international airport and the industrial areas around Sualkuchi, which are currently under development.
The project is scheduled for completion within four years and will be executed by the Assam Public Works Roads Department (APWRD).
The New Development Bank, formerly known as the BRICS Development Bank, is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This latest funding underscores the bank’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development in the region.
