DPAP chief Ghulam Nabi Azad has dissolved all structural levels of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), including state, provincial, zonal, district, and block-level committees, along with the roles of chief spokesperson and other party spokespersons.

This sweeping decision, taken with the chairman’s approval, signals a major overhaul of the party’s internal framework. The move follows the party’s dismal performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha and assembly elections, where DPAP failed to make any impact.

Founded by Azad, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and a veteran union minister, the party is now facing an uncertain future. Since the electoral defeat, Azad has remained largely absent from the political scene and has not issued any public statement.

His silence has extended to the party’s stance on current political developments in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving many within the DPAP disheartened and without direction.

The political inactivity has further deepened the crisis, especially when other regional players like the ruling National Conference and main opposition parties are actively engaging in cadre-building and grassroots-level strategies. In contrast, DPAP has neither convened any meetings nor proposed a roadmap for its revival.

Azad’s last public appearance was limited to paying condolences over the death of political leaders, after which he has reportedly stayed away from any political engagements in the region. Senior party members admit that the lack of leadership and vision has left the party’s rank and file demoralised and isolated.

The DPAP, launched by Azad on September 26, 2022, following his departure from the Congress party, initially garnered attention through public rallies across Jammu and Kashmir. He had positioned the party as a new regional force demanding assembly elections and restoration of democratic processes in the Union Territory.

However, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections proved to be a major setback, with all three DPAP candidates losing by significant margins. The party’s poor performance continued in the assembly elections, where 22 candidates, including Azad’s close aides, contested but failed to win any seats.

Azad himself was unable to campaign effectively due to illness, which further weakened the party’s electoral prospects. The magnitude of the losses has now cast serious doubt over the future viability of DPAP, with its current dissolution seen as a last-ditch effort at revival or a potential signal of its eventual wind-up.
