A Bangladeshi man, suspected of being a cattle smuggler, was shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel early on Friday morning near Berubari in the Jalpaiguri district of north Bengal. This area, located along the India-Bangladesh border, has no barbed-wire fencing.
The BSF reported that the incident occurred when a group of about 30 suspected cattle smugglers was spotted crossing the border with cattle. When the BSF patrol team challenged them and asked them to stop, the group allegedly attacked the officers.
“We had no choice but to open fire,” said a BSF officer. One of the security personnel was injured during the confrontation.
The body of the suspected smuggler remains on the Bangladeshi side of the border, while the rest of the group managed to escape into Bangladesh.
The BSF has now increased security in this unfenced area to prevent further smuggling attempts.
This incident comes amid already tense diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh, raising concerns about border security and bilateral ties.
