Panic gripped Howrah on Tuesday (Ashtami) night after bike-borne assailants shot dead Suresh Yadav (55), a panchayat head from Bihar’s Gopalganj district. The incident took place around 9:30 pm at Ban Bihari Basu Lane under Howrah police station, a bustling area crowded with devotees and visitors during the Durga Puja celebrations.
According to police, Yadav was walking along the lane when two miscreants on a motorbike approached him and fired three rounds at close range. He collapsed on the spot in a pool of blood. Locals reported hearing the gunshots amid the festive noise and chaos.
Police personnel rushed to the scene and immediately shifted the injured Yadav to Howrah District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Howrah City Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathi confirmed the incident, stating, “At around 9:30 pm, two miscreants came on a motorbike in the Sandhya Bazar area and opened fire on Suresh Yadav, a resident of Gopalganj, Bihar. He had arrived in Howrah two days ago. The deceased was involved in crimes in Bihar. We have already obtained some important evidence and the culprits will be arrested very soon.”
Preliminary investigation suggests that the assailants had been monitoring Yadav’s movements before striking. CCTV footage from the locality has already been collected, and a massive search operation has been launched to trace the attackers.
Police are also probing Yadav’s activities since his arrival in Howrah and the people he met during his stay.
“We are analysing the call records of Yadav’s mobile phone and zeroing in on some leads. We believe this could help establish the motive behind the killing and any possible Bihar connection,” said a police officer.
The Bihar police are expected to be contacted soon, while investigators will also speak with Yadav’s family to ascertain possible reasons for the murder.
