Bihar's tableau at the Republic Day parade on Sunday showcased the state's rich cultural heritage, highlighting its deep connection to Buddha and ancient wisdom. The tableau, which was part of the 76th Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path, made a return after eight years.
The tableau followed the central theme of 'Swarnim Bharat: Virasat Aur Vikas' and prominently featured the ruins of the ancient Nalanda University. Buddhist monks were shown sitting around these ruins, symbolising the importance of knowledge and peace.
At the front of the tableau was an installation of a statue of Lord Buddha in a meditative pose, symbolising peace and harmony. This statue is inspired by one at the Ghora Katora reservoir in Rajgir, a famous tourist spot in Bihar.
According to the defence ministry, the tableau highlights Bihar's tradition of knowledge and peace, describing the state as a land of wisdom, salvation, and tranquility since ancient times.
In addition to the Nalanda ruins, the tableau also included a depiction of the sacred Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The ruins of Nalanda University, which was founded in 427 CE by Emperor Kumaragupta, were also featured.
Nalanda, the world's first residential university, attracted scholars from China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, and beyond for over 800 years.
Murals on the side panels of the tableau illustrated important historical figures and events. One mural showed Chanakya, the teacher of Emperor Chandragupta, while another depicted scenes from ancient Vedic assemblies, highlighting early democratic governance and judicial systems. Another mural celebrated the 'Guru-Shishya' tradition and Aryabhata's contributions to mathematics.

The post highlighted Bihar’s historical and educational significance, calling attention to its role in shaping the world’s understanding of civilization and peace.
This year's Republic Day celebrations are centered around 75 years of the Indian Constitution, and the theme for the tableaux is 'Swarnim Bharat: Virasat Aur Vikas.' Sixteen tableaux from various states and Union Territories, along with 15 from central ministries, will be part of the parade.
