Assam's government has launched an ambitious infrastructure initiative worth Rs 1 lakh crore to spur economic development. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined the plan during a high-profile meeting with diplomats from 36 countries, including ambassadors and high commissioners from ASEAN, BIMSTEC, and European nations.
The infrastructure push includes the construction of three new bridges across the Brahmaputra River and a satellite city near Guwahati, developed in partnership with Singapore. Additionally, a new railway connection linking Guwahati to Gelephu, Bhutan, is also in progress.
Highlighting Assam’s robust 12.5% growth rate, Sarma stated, "Assam has the requisite skill and ability to deliver."
He emphasised the state's strategic location as a gateway to BBN and ASEAN countries, offering opportunities in tourism, logistics, and renewable energy.
Assam’s commitment to green energy is evident, with new industries mandated to utilise renewable power sources. Discussions are also ongoing with the Ministry of Defence to establish a defence corridor connecting Guwahati and Nagaon.
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota further noted Assam’s potential as an emerging investment hub, pointing to educational institutions like IIT, AIIMS, and IIM, alongside a burgeoning industrial sector.
The state will host the Advantage Assam Summit 2.0 in February, featuring cultural events such as the traditional Jhumur dance.
Union Minister for Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal attended the investors' roundtable, underscoring the central government’s support for Assam’s development initiatives.
The North East Skill Centre’s programme to train 10,000 youths highlights Assam’s focus on workforce development, preparing the region for future economic growth.
