Maddur police in Karnataka’s Mandya district have registered a case against BJP leader and MLC CT Ravi after he allegedly made provocative remarks against the Muslim community during a Ganesha visarjan rally.

The case, filed on Thursday, comes a day after Ravi’s statements at the rally, and has been booked under Section 196(1)(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to promoting enmity between groups on religious or other grounds. Addressing participants, Ravi described Hindus as “born in India” and Muslims as “outsiders”.

“We have not gathered here to celebrate. We have come to tell you not to take advantage of our silence and goodness. You are the outsiders, and we are born here,” he said. Ravi accused Muslims of trying to “destroy Hindus”, warning that while Hindus would respect Muslims if they “behaved”, they would “behead them” if challenged.

He also targeted the Congress government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, alleging they were attempting to divide society on caste lines.

“Siddaramaiah, don’t think you will last long in power. We won’t allow this country to be destroyed,” Ravi said, calling for Hindus to unite above caste differences. Citing the example of Uttar Pradesh under CM Yogi Adityanath, Ravi said, “In Yogi’s land, JCBs have been set on even those who throw stones at the Ganesha idol. If you have the strength, do that work. Otherwise, Yogi will come here also.”

The remarks follow clashes in Maddur on Sunday evening during a Ganesha idol immersion procession. Stone pelting was reported, leading to police action. Around 22 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

In retaliation, another group allegedly targeted a mosque, sparking further tensions between the two communities. Ravi demanded action against police personnel involved in the lathi-charge on Hindu activists, as well as the arrest of all those accused of throwing stones.

Confirming the case, Maddur police said the complaint was registered on Thursday under BNS provisions. Officials added that further investigation is underway into Ravi’s comments, which have sparked strong reactions across political and community lines.
