Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state, accusing them of betraying the people by failing to secure Haryana’s rightful share of water.
“From the state to the centre, both the governments have shrugged off their responsibility. At the same time, both the governments of Punjab and Haryana have done a lot of gimmickry to deceive the people of their respective states, because the truth is that this time there was neither a shortage of water in Bhakra nor did Haryana demand additional water,” he said.
“Haryana is demanding its rightful share of water, but the Aam Aadmi Party government of Punjab has stopped Haryana's rightful share of water to hide all its failures. This controversy was deliberately created to create an atmosphere of political tug-of-war between the two states. The Haryana government also fully supported the Aam Aadmi Party in this gimmick to divert attention from all the issues,” he said.
He further said that the public has now seen through the drama of both parties. “Despite being a central project, central security forces were not deployed there. Using its power under Article 257, the central government did not even direct Punjab to release water. Despite repeated demands, a special session of the assembly was not called and neither was an all-party delegation made to meet the Prime Minister,” Hooda pointed out.
“Instead of taking meaningful action, the state government relied on empty rhetoric. From March 15 till now, they have only tried to mislead the public, knowing that Haryana is set to receive water by May 21,” he said.
Hooda also highlighted the ongoing issues of power and water shortage in the state, accusing the BJP government of feigning ignorance while citizens continue to suffer.
