Chautala’s bastion Sirsa to see a triangular contest

Sirsa is considered a major constituency in Haryana, which has in the past witnessed tight contests between the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP). In 2019 Gopal Kanda clinched power for HLP with 44,915 voters.

Sirsa, located in Haryana’s Bangar region,  is among the state’s key Assembly constituencies and home to former five-time Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala.  

 

As for the demography, there were 1,51,610 voters in the constituency during the 2019 Haryana assembly elections. 

 

Out of these 80,947 voters were male and 70,177 female. 

 

This time, the elections are scheduled for October 5th and the results will be announced on October 8th. 

 

The seat has in the past seen tight contests between the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP). 

 

BJP has fielded Rohtash Jangra from the Sirsa seat for the upcoming Haryana assembly seat. Meanwhile, Congress has fielded Gokul Setia. Gopal Kanda will contest from the Haryana Lokhit Party. 

 

Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have announced an alliance with Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP). And, collectively they have chosen Kanda to contest election from Sirsa. 

 

 In 2019, Gopal Goyal Kanda of the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) won the seat with 44,915 votes (31.65%), defeating independent candidate Gokul Setia by a slim margin of just 602 votes. This election saw a slight increase of 1.39 per cent in Kanda’s vote share compared to his previous performances. 

 

Former BJP candidate Pardeep Ratusaria, garnered 21.24 per cent votes, a 5.62 per cent drop compared to the party’s previous performance, when they secured 26.87%, even as the Congress’s Hoshiari Lal increased his vote share slightly to 7.13 per cent. 

 

The voter turnout decreased to 68.38 per cent, a significant drop of 9.42 per cent from 2014.

 

The Election saw a competitive race between Makhan Lal Singla of the INLD and Gopal Goyal Kanda of HLP in 2014. Singla secured victory with 46,573 votes (32.30 per cent), defeating Kanda by 2,938 votes, a margin that was notably tighter than in previous years. 

 

BJP started its wave in Sirsa when they fielded Sunita Setia, who garnered 26.87 per cent votes, marking a massive increase of 25.4 per cent in the party’s vote share.

 

The Congress, meanwhile, experienced a sharp decline in numbers, with Naveen Kumar Kedia securing just 6.78 per cent votes, down 19.39 per cent from his previous performance.

 

Sirsa, a district in Haryana has 342 villages, 5 towns, and 7 Panchayats. More than two-thirds of the population in the district live in rural areas.

 

The sex ratio of the district is 897 females to 1000 males. The literacy rate is 70.9%, and Scheduled castes form 29.91% of the population.
