Manipur's Churachandpur district reeled under simmering tension on Friday following a violent clash between protestors and security forces on Thursday night.

The incident, sparked by the suspension of a constable, resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals and injuries to 42 others.

The unrest began after reports surfaced of a video showing constable Siamlalpaul with armed men circulating online.

His subsequent suspension ignited anger within a section of the community, leading to a large crowd storming the mini-secretariat in protest. This confrontation ultimately escalated into a clash with security forces.

Two individuals, identified as Letlalkhuol Gangte and Thanggunlen Haokip, lost their lives in the altercation. Additionally, two critically injured individuals were admitted to the Churachandpur district hospital.

Reports emerged of damage and destruction of property within the mini-secretariat area, including crucial government documents and records.

The official residence of the deputy commissioner also became a target of the mob, being set ablaze in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) vehemently condemned the events and issued a set of demands.

They called for the immediate removal of Churachandpur's district superintendent of police (SP) Shivanand Surve and deputy commissioner (DC) S Dharun Kumar within 24 hours.

Furthermore, they demanded their replacements be appointed from within the Kuki Zo community.

As an additional condition, the ITLF demanded the reversal of Siamlalpaul's suspension within the same timeframe, threatening the closure of all government offices and holding the DC and SP personally responsible for any further unrest.

In response to the ITLF's call, Churachandpur observed a complete shutdown on Friday, with streets and markets deserted.

Security forces, including Assam Rifles personnel, have been deployed to conduct flag marches and maintain order within the town.
