Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday called for reconciliation among the diverse communities in the state, urging them to come together to restore peace in the wake of ongoing ethnic strife.

Speaking during the 133rd Patriots' Day celebrations, Singh stressed on the need for unity and the shedding of differences based on caste, creed, or community.

"Patriots' Day is a reminder of the sacrifices made by many Manipuris for the country. Today, I appeal to the people of Manipur to assist in bringing peace and harmony to the state. The time has come for reconciliation among all communities," Singh stated, citing the pressing need for solidarity among the state's citizens.

He stressed that while the state's core issues must remain a priority, unity among the people is crucial.

"We are all Manipuris, we are all Indians, and we should live together. I also appeal to the press to support efforts in fostering peace in the state," Singh added, acknowledging the role of the media in shaping public opinion.

In a gesture aimed at fostering goodwill, Singh announced that state ministers and MLAs would host feasts at relief camps on Independence Day, August 15.

He urged hill MLAs to reach out to the displaced persons residing in these camps, expressing hope that such actions would send a positive message to those who have been affected by the unrest.

Reflecting on the state's progress before the outbreak of violence in May last year, Singh noted that Manipur was advancing rapidly among Northeastern states and other small states in the country.

However, the violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, brought significant hardship, resulting in the loss of lives and the displacement of many.

"Despite the challenges, central leaders are closely monitoring the situation and have provided the necessary security and assistance," Singh assured, noting that the state has seen a gradual return to peace, with no major flare-ups in the past five to six months.

The Chief Minister concluded with an appeal for unity, urging the people to rise above political affiliations and differences to work together for the betterment of the state. "Let us come together as one to restore peace in Manipur," Singh said.

Patriots' Day is observed annually on August 13 to honor those who sacrificed their lives during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War.
