West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday urged junior doctors to end their fast-unto-death, promising further discussions to address their demands.

CM Banerjee spoke with the doctors over the phone, asking them to withdraw their protest, which is in response to the rape and murder of a colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

“Protests are valid, but they should not disrupt healthcare services,” Banerjee said, as Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty visited the protest site in Dharmatala.

Banerjee assured the doctors that many of their demands have already been met and requested "three to four more months" to address the remaining issues.

“I understand your concerns. Let’s discuss the rest, but you cannot dictate to the government what should be done,” she emphasised, encouraging dialogue between her government and the medical fraternity.

Pant’s visit marked the state government’s attempt to bring the protest, which has continued for over two weeks, to a peaceful conclusion.
