Telangana government passed the historic bill related to enhancement of reservations to Backward Classes to 42 per cent.
Congress senior leadership lauded the move as the Telangana assembly passed two bills to hike the reservation for other backward classes in education, employment and local bodies to 42 per cent, fulfilling a major campaign promise based on the recently concluded caste survey but also triggering controversy over the breached 50 per cent cap on caste-based reservations.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi termed it as a revolutionary step towards social justice that has also dropped a wall of 50 pc of reservation in the State.
“The Congress government has fulfilled its promise to increase OBC reservation in Telangana,” he said in a post on ‘X’.
Gandhi further said, “I am constantly saying that X-ray — that is racial census — can only get backward and deprived communities their proper right. Telangana has shown the way, this is the need of the whole country. There will be caste census in India, we will get it done.”
Wayanad Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi, too, congratulated the government and extended her wishes to “my brothers and sisters of Telangana.”
She further said “We have fulfilled the promise made to you in the Assembly elections. This is an important step taken towards social justice, which will empower you socially and economically. We are always with you...”
Telangana CM also took to X to extend gratitude to Rahul and Priyanka for their support.
"It is indeed a matter of pride, Rahul Gandhi Ji and Priyanka Gandhi Ji that our Congress government in Telangana is fulfilling every dream, implementing every guarantee and making real every promise...."
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said the government’s historic decision to allocate 42 pc OBC reservations in all spheres is the biggest evidence of the Congress party’s commitment to the social justice mission.
He said Rahul Gandhi has been at the forefront to implementing this nationwide and will continue to pressurise the Centre to conduct a caste census.
