On Thursday, Mehbooba Mufti, the PDP president and former chief minister, said that if the BJP is re-elected to power at the centre, it will abolish the constitution. 

 

She was interacting with reporters on the margins of a public meeting held in Srinagar. 

 

Mehbooba said that the BJP is focused on religious issues and discussing (mangalsutra) because they believe they have lost in the nation's first two phases of the Lok Sabha elections.

 

She added that people are aware of their motives in bringing up religious matters and have realised that the party would not benefit the country or its people, adding that "the BJP only knows to make Hindus and Muslims fight each other," she stated. 

 

She further said the constitution would be abolished if the BJP is re-elected to the centre.

 

In response to a question, the PDP president stated that the encounters in the Anantnag-Rajouri area are aimed at preventing Mehbooba Mufti from reaching Parliament and the people from voting.

 

"Poonch attacks are condemnable, but arrests made afterwards should be looked into by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who should pass directions to security forces to stop this arrest culture," Mehbooba added.

 

Furthermore, Mehbooba said that the police and administration should remain impartial in political affairs and restrict themselves from engaging in them.

 

"Police are preventing us from reaching out to people, but at the same time, they have supported proxies of the BJP, thus curtailing our movement, which is a brazen violation of the guidelines set by ECI," she said.
