Cooling operations are still underway at the Chandni Chowk market, a day after firefighters managed to control a massive blaze, officials reported on Saturday.
The fire erupted at the Old Katra Marwadi Market on Nai Sadak around 5 pm on Thursday.
Despite no casualties, the inferno ravaged over 110 shops and godowns, resulting in an estimated loss running into crores of rupees.
Currently, at least three fire tenders remain at the site, continuing efforts to cool the affected areas, according to an official from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS).
"Flames are still emerging in some sections. The operation may extend for a few more hours," the official stated.
Over 50 fire tenders and 200 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze, working tirelessly throughout Thursday night.
The fire was brought under control by 4:30 am on Friday. Cooling operations continued throughout the day on Friday and into Saturday.
A police officer indicated that once the cooling operation ceases, clearing the rubble of the damaged shops will commence. He reported that garment shops and godowns within the Bhagwati and Anil market complexes were completely destroyed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) MK Meena confirmed that the fire is now almost extinguished, with around 110-120 shops either fully or partially affected.
A case has been registered under sections 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) at the Kotwali police station. Investigations are ongoing.
One firefighter sustained superficial burns during the operation, Meena added.
