A severe heat wave hit Delhi, with the highest temperature reaching 45.2 degrees Celsius on Monday, while the weather department forecasted some relief from the extreme heat from June 19.
The capital city was put under a 'red' alert, which will be in effect on Tuesday, and the maximum temperature is expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius.
Delhi has experienced more than a week of heatwave conditions and consistently warm nights. On Monday night, the minimum temperature was recorded at slightly over 33 degrees Celsius. Similar temperatures are expected for the next few nights, with relief likely from Thursday onwards.
Heatwave and severe heatwave conditions were documented in most parts of Delhi. The Safdarjung observatory, the primary weather station in the national capital, reported a high of 45.2 degrees Celsius, which is 6.4 notches above the season's average.
Monday morning started off warm, with the minimum temperature reaching 33 degrees Celsius, 5.5 notches above normal.
At the Palam weather station, the maximum temperature reached 46 degrees Celsius, which is seven notches above normal. Meanwhile, the Lodhi Road, Ridge, and Ayanagar observatories recorded temperatures of 45.6 degrees, 46.3 degrees, and 46.4 degrees, respectively.
As per the seven-day forecast from the IMD, Delhi will see some relief starting from Wednesday.
The city is forecasted to be under a 'yellow' alert on Wednesday and Thursday, while it will be under a 'green' alert on Friday and Saturday.
Following Wednesday, a new western disturbance will move towards northwest India, impacting Delhi and bringing relief, as per the weather office.
