Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, has raised concerns over the upcoming delimitation of parliamentary constituencies in 2026. He urged all political parties in Punjab to come together, discuss its effects, and, if necessary, strongly oppose it.
Bajwa explained that delimitation would not only affect southern states but also impact northern states, including Punjab. He emphasised that leaders in Punjab should unite to decide on a course of action.
He pointed out that the total number of MPs in the Lok Sabha is expected to increase from 543 to around 848 after delimitation. Punjab’s representation may rise from 13 to about 18 seats, but its percentage share in Parliament will decline.
Meanwhile, overpopulated states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh will gain more seats—around 450 in total—further strengthening the BJP’s presence in Parliament.

Bajwa highlighted that Punjab is a unique state, where the Sikh community forms the majority. He also noted that the BJP has little political presence in Punjab. Given these factors, he suggested that the BJP-led central government is likely to proceed with the existing delimitation method.
Warning of the consequences, Bajwa said Punjab’s ability to protect its political and economic interests would weaken if its representation in Parliament declines. He pointed out that despite having 13 MPs now, Punjab has already been overlooked by the central government. If its representation is further reduced, the situation could worsen.
